Joe Joyce Grand Champion of Pot Luck #1 2008!!!!!! Well done and good luck in future tournaments!!!
2008 Pot Luck tournament has come to an end!!!! While round two saw more time-outs/resignations than actually completed games, all participants can be proud of their results!! Starting with Group B, the 'losers bracket', we have a tie at the top: 1. Jejuejejeu - 4-1-1 1. Donutdonut - 4-1-1 3. JuanRodriguez - 3-3-0 4. George Duke - 0-6-0 And in Group A, our 'champions group', we have an undefeated champion: 1. Joe Joyce 6-0-0 2. CarlosCarlso 3-3-0 3. Charles Daniel 3-3-0 4. Graeme Grayhawke - resigned Congratulations to Joe on being the Champ!!!
I reverted them to the backup files, but I was unable to change the permissions on the files. They may need to enter their passwords into the logs page to see the games listed.
Fergus, please fix these 2 games that have timed out: Grand Shatranj carlos-joejoyce-2008-303-724 Falcon Chess joejoyce-carlos-2008-303-721 Thanks, Joe
I just took five days off the time used for any move held up by the period of downtime this weekend. Let me know if any logs need to be fixed due to declaring a winner before I adjusted the time controls.
Okay, we seem to be back. Fergus, could you give carlos carlos some time back in these tourney games? Grand Shatranj carlos-joejoyce-2008-303-724 30' 20' ago Joe Joyce has won. N/A Delete Falcon Chess joejoyce-carlos-2008-303-721 30' 21' ago Joe Joyce has won. N/A Delete He should get at least 50 hours back in each game, if possible. Heh, I admit to hoping he'd run out of time, because he was down to 2 days in Grand Shatranj, and not a lot more in Falcon, but having the entire site down for 4 days was not what I had in mind... Joe
No problem with substitutions...if anyone wants to, leave a comment before Carlos sets up games and the switch can be made. Graeme, thanks for making the chart.
No objection from me, Charles. I will try and get onto assigning these games over the weekend.
/play/pbm/play.php?game%3DAsylum+Chess%26settings%3DAsylum+2
I am sure my opponents won't mind because this game is much shorter and easier to play.
Based on rankings current as of the start of the tournament, each group looks like this: Top group, playing for the PotLuck2008 Title! Charles Birds (vs Graeme) Stealth (vs Joe ), Titans (vs Carlos) Joe Atlantean (vs Charles), Grand (vs Carlos), Lemurian (vs Graeme) Carlos Falcon (vs Joe), Hole (vs Graeme), Wormhole (vs. Charles) Graeme Circular(vsCarlos),Modern Courier(vsCharles),Save/Standard (vsJoe) Second Tier, playing for pride and a can of corn*. George Altair (vs Juan ),JacksWitches (vs Jeju),Rococo(vsDonut) Jeju Eight Stone (vs George ),Racing (vs Donut), Wuss II (vs Juan) Donut Hammer (vs Jeju), Korean (vs Juan), Rollerball (vs George) Juan Bachelor (vs Donut), Hostage (vs George),Switching (vs Jeju) *In order to receive the prize, one must appear in person at a designated location, which shall be so designated at the completion of this tournament. If anyone has the talent and time to make this part of the schedule (round two, not the can of corn collection part) into a chart of some sort, as Graeme so ably did last time, that would be appreciated. Carlos will offer to assign the games and get them started when he has time. Once he does that, game on. If you find any time goofs in the game settings, report them to Carlos and he should be able to restart the game. (copied and pasted from 3rd courier tournament page, written by Fergus) Time Controls Game Courier has very versatile and sophisticated time controls, and these will be used to time all games in the tournament. Details on how time controls work can be found in the User's Guide. The same time controls will be used for each game. Here's what I propose to use: Pace: 4 moves per week Spare Time: 14 days Grace Time: 24 hours Extra Time: 8 hours Bonus Time: 6 hours for moving within 24 hours Tie-Breaking If two players attain the same score, ties will be broken by the following methods in a topdown order: Buchholz / Solkoff method (Compares scores of all opponents defeated by tied players.) Sonneborn-Berger (Compares scores of all opponents defeated or tied with tied players.) Number of Wins (Wins count as 1, ties as nothing.) Most Blacks (Whoever has won more games as the second player wins the tie.) Good luck to all! Any problems found in any of the above, let me know. Note to Rich: Based on how long round one took...can't imagine there's any way we'll have this wrapped up in calendar year 2008...at least not the top tier.
A belated thanks for the update to everyone. Any idea when this event will finish? I have a feeling it is going to run into the 2009 IAGO World Tour schedule. I would want to get the CV site to be on the Tour again, but events do need to wrap up before the following year starts.
Standings after round 1: Charles 6 – 0 6 pts Graeme 5 – 0 – 1 5.5 pts Joe Joyce 4 – 1 -1 4.5 pts Carlos 3 – 3 - 0 3 pts George 2 wins – 4 losses 2 pts Jeju 1 – 5 – 0 1 pt Juan 1 – 5 – 0 1 pt Donut 1 - 5 - 0 1 pt New groupings: Winners’ Pot Charles Graeme Joe Carlos Consolation (Losers’) Pot: George 2 pts Jeju 1 pt Juan 1 pt Donut 1 pt
Pot Luck 2008 round one is in the books...will try to get a schedule for round 2 up soon.
Hey, Carlos - you should delete the 2 dead games of Graeme's and mine; they're about to expire on time on his move. Juan and I have made twice as many moves in our untimed game as our timed one, so there shouldn't be any problems with it not being timed.
Hi - just got online and saw this comment - no time limits in that game of Atlantean Barroom either, though we are playing it...
yeah, i think i must have forgotten to enter the tournament field for that one...
Carlos, Tournament Filter: [PL*] yields 23 games on the Game Courier Game Logs page - no Atlantean Barroom Shatranj.
Rich,
do you mean this match chart?
The game-names are linked to the rules and I'll be linking the game-results to the Courier Matches today
Carlos,
Thanks for re-assigning my games, all appears to be working now.
i think all the first round games are up now, let me know if anything is missing/wrong.
done! joe, jeju, juan - please move in the new games.
Carlos,
I've created a new ID graemecn and used it to post this message. Can you assign my tournament games to this new ID?
Cheers
Graeme
graeme, i did enter grayhawke... every time. i don't know why it changed it to grayhawke2.
Carlos, I don't mind creating a new userid, but am not sure how that helps. Can't the games be reassigned to grayhawke?
i wondered about that. i entered grayhawke without the 2, but i noticed that the game logs all say grayhawke2. i'm not sure why that happened, or what to do. maybe you could create a new username if it's no big deal?
Carlos, I can view the games but cannot play them. The userid seems to be grayhawke2 - it should be just grayhawke, without the 2.
Cheers
G.
Thanks to the efforts of Carlos Carlos the tournament has started. Good luck to all.
The game is Birds and Ninjas. the ninja guards are normal - they DO NOT HAVE leaping camel move. All std rules EXCEPT one option: each side can drop 4 ninja pawns as per drop rule spec.
most games are up. charles, which preset do you want to use: Charles Birds (vs Donut) you can check on the games by entering PL1 in the games field. counting them, the joe-juan game of atlantean doesn't show up tho, not sure why. for some reason something is wrong with the games involving graeme. maybe i used the wrong username. graeme, if you can't access those games let me know. however, i don't have the power to delete/alter games so i guess i will just reassign them.
Carlos has indicated that all games will be assigned and started no later than the end of the coming weekend.
Can someone please post the complete and final list of games so I can update the IAGO site with the right games? Also, please let me know which chess variant is being played. Would I be right to presume that Stealth refers to Stealth Chess (the Stratego-like) chess game or something else (for example)?
The veto period seems to have passed with a few smatterings, a flurry and in the end all games hold on and retain membership. The results of the cricket were 304 total runs scored, which converts to 214 duodecimals. As a result, we are going with scenario 3. In random scenario 3, alpha2 is match 1, alpha3 is match 2, alpha1 is match 3. Charles Birds (vs Donut), Stealth (vs Carlos), Titans (vs George) Carlos Falcon (vs Charles), Hole (vs George), Wormhole (vs. Donut) George Altair (vs Carlos), JacksWitches (vs Donut), Rococo(vs Charles) Donut Hammer (vs George), Korean (vs Charles), Rollerball (vs Carlos) Joe Atlantean (vs Juan), Grand (vs Graeme), Lemurian (vs Jeju) Graeme Circular (vs Joe), Modern Courier(vs Jeju), Save the Standard (vs Juan) Jeju Eight Stone (vs Graeme), Racing (vs Juan), Wuss II (vs Joe) Juan Bachelor (vs Jeju), Hostage (vs Joe), Switching (vs Graeme) Early analysis of the matchups finds a few interesting tidbits. Only Juan and Donut end up playing a game they cast a veto against. Donut on Jacks & Witches, Juan on Save the Standard 13x13. Joe, on the other hand, cast no vetoes but did allude to a few games he was not keen to play¡¦and drew one of them, Wuss II. Juan and Jeju are drawn in a rematch of a game completed with a Jeju resignation 320 days ago. If anyone has the talent and time to make the schedule into a chart of some sort, that¡¯d be appreciated. Carlos has offered to assign the games and get them started. Once he does that, game on. If you find any time goofs in the game settings, report them to Carlos and he should be able to restart the game. Unless there¡¯s a strong outcry against, I¡¯d say¡¦ (copied and pasted from 3rd courier tournament page, written by Fergus) Time Controls Game Courier has very versatile and sophisticated time controls, and these will be used to time all games in the tournament. I encourage all participants and FANS of CV Potluck 2008 to register at: http://chessvariants.wikidot.com/ This'll get you access to the ins and outs!
seeing as we are allowed to veto for any reason at all, i'll go for... circular chess with crooked bishops and queen eight stone hammer chess hostage chess racing kings rococo save the standard 13x13 titan chess
about the rules of wormhole chess: the trapped pawns on d3 and d8 are allowed a single diagonal move to begin. i don't think this is written in the rules.
Randomly assigning games: Each group has 4 players: Player A Player B Player C Player D A is the highest seed, D the lowest. Player A has match 1 vs player B, match 2 vs player C, match 3 vs player D Player B has match 1 vs player C, match 2 vs player D, match 3 vs player A Player C has match 1 vs player D, match 2 vs player A, match 3 vs player B Player D has match 1 vs player A, match 2 vs player B, match 3 vs player C Each player brought 3 games...based on their alphabetical order, game alpha1, alpha2 and alpha3. In random scenario 1, alpha1 is match 1, alpha2 is match 2, alpha3 is match 3 In random scenario 2, alpha 2 is match 1, alpha3 is match 2, alpha1 is match 3. In random scenario 3, alpha3 is match 1, alpha1 is match 2, alpha2 is match 3. All games will start at the same time and have generous time allotments. They will start as soon as Carlosly possible from or after April 21st (if no games are vetoed by 4 players). Which random scenario is used will be based on the following cricket match: Only Twenty20 International Bangladesh v Pakistan at Karachi - Apr 20, 2008 (18:00 local, 13:00 GMT) If the total number of runs scored (combined Bangladesh and Pakistan) results in the numbers 1, 2 or 3 in the ones column, we go scenario 1. If the number in the ones column is 4, 5 or 6, we go scenario 2. If it's 7, 8 or 9, scenario 3. If it is zero, we look at the number in the tens column. If that too is zero, we look at the number in the hundreds column. If that too is zero, than the match was called off and we look at the total number of points scored in the last NBA game to finish on Sunday the 20th. Cricket results can be found at cricinfo.com Any questions??
I veto Saving the Standard 13x13 Bachelor Chess
Juan, here's the preset and rules for Modern Courier Chess - I'll adjust the wiki pointer. Question: Do we want the version with the modern queen or the mann? /play/pbm/play.php?game%3DModern+Courier+Chess%26settings%3Ddefault
Ok, here's comes a veto or three. First though, I didn't see a preset for modern courier chess. Does it have one? Did i just miss it? I'd agree to veto these: Wormhole Chess Titan Chess Saving the Standard 13x13 Good luck all!
I will have no problem veto a game, but I need to read up on the rules first - I am not too familiar with a lot of the games here . I dont see anything I immediately dislike as of now. .
I cast one veto for each of the following: Atlantean Barroom Shatranj Rococo Falcon Chess
Aren't we about to start the 1 week veto process? What happens now? Are we all being gentlemen?
All games have been named. Roughly 48 hours left to change the games nominated. Time for a review of how the tournament will proceed. During the 7 day veto period any player may veto any game for any reason whatsoever. If you feel it is a bad game, if you don't like the game, or even if you love the game, have played it a lot and just don't feel like playing it now. Using a veto is simply a manner of expressing a preference. If you prefer not to play a game, feel free to veto it. If a game you named, or even invented, is vetoed, please don't take it as an insult. In fact, it may have been vetoed because others are afraid to play you in that game...which is a compliment in a way. Reminder...Each player will play each game that they nominated ONE time. They will play it against ONE other player in their pool. Which player they play it against will be determined randomly after the veto period. They manner of randomly setting the matches will be described in a future post, and will involve the results of the following cricket match: Only Twenty20 International Bangladesh v Pakistan at Karachi - Apr 20, 2008 (18:00 local, 13:00 GMT)
The event page: http://chessvariants.wikidot.com/cv-potluck-2008 Is now up on the IAGO World Tour schedule: http://www.iagoworldtour.com/ I will also get the games into the officially registered with IAGO list.
I've just posted links to the game rules here: http://chessvariants.wikidot.com/potluck-game-rules Please check your games to see that everything is correct. Thanks, Joe
George, Carlos, Charles, Juan and Donut. To get access to the wiki, follow this: http://chessvariants.wikidot.com/cv-potluck-2008 From there, create account (top right). Once you have an account, go back to the page listed above and follow links on the left for becoming a member. My membership was approved in a couple of days.
I would encourage people to join the wiki. And, without looking, jeju, I suspect you are listed as a member... yep - 2 hours ago. Shucks! Now I can't go change your games without you being able to do anything about it ;-) Okay, everyone's in and we've had 1 change. Is everybody comfortable with the make-up of the games? This has turned into a nice little amalgam of a CV Tournament with Invent and Play. I like this format. It gives people a chance to play games they really want to play, whatever their [the games'] provenance. But I'm sitting here chuckling audibly because I often hold a minority position on these things; so how do the rest of you feel? Have we got a good tourney shaping up with the games we've got listed?
Changed my games
Replacing TriMac HexChess
with
Circular Chess with Crooked Bishops and Queen
Joe, saw your comment on the Pot Lock page on the wiki page. Was going to respond...but I haven't been accepted as a member. I think a vigorous discussion over there might be limited as Carlos, Juan and the Donut are not members (yet) either. Doesn't look like George and Charles are members, either. I'll encourage the others to join, but depending on how long it takes for acceptance, any discussion of vetos and the like might be better served here.
Altair standard, Rococo standard, Jacks & Witches.
An as yet unpublished preset for TriMac HexChess is available here
Couple of points. George may or may not choose a third game. If he doesn't, he has to decide which of the two he named he wants to play twice. Also, does TriMac HexChess have a preset? If so, where can I find it? If not, how can we play it?
That's everyone named their initial set of games - the full list is here
My games are 1.Roller Ball 2.Hammer Chess 3.Korean Chess
My games:
- TriMac HexChess
- Modern Courier Chess
- Save the Standard 13x13
Joe, I've added a comments section to the Named Games page thinking that it could be used for any negotiations, questions etc.
Thanks, Graeme - I saw 'start', but couldn't believe it was the 'real name' of the Welcome page. We're getting an interesting mix of games listed. Now, it's not veto time yet, so should I put up another page for negotiations ['what the heck is *that* game??? I'll tell ya what, I'll drop this game and vote against that game there if you drop this game and that game...'], or can we just add them to the wiki page? ;-) Seriously, we are getting a broad range of games proposed. There are some very nice choices there, guys. Ought to be interesting.
Joe and Graeme, the page and link look great. I've applied to join the wiki group and if accepted (fingers crossed!) I'll update the page as we go. Thanks. Jejujeju games: Wuss II Racing Kings Eight Stone
Joe, I've hooked it into the Welcome page (page name start).
The quickest way to find the name of a page is to go to that page and then look in you browser's address bar - the text after the final '/' is the page's name.
Here's the initial setup: http://chessvariants.wikidot.com/cv-potluck-2008 Graeme, how do I tell what the real name of the Welcome Page is, so I can make this page a child page of Welcome?
Ooops! Problem fixed, the Grayhawke is seeded 4th and in pool B.
Please give a bit of thought to what you want for user names or nicknames. In event we ever get anything on TV, they will be having these nicknames in with your name, like 'Devilfish', 'Jesus', and 'The Poker Brat'. Of course, not everyone needs them, but think how you want yourself to come off. I will say the nicknames are not mandatory, but could be useful.
No problem. Believe me, it's quite easy to set up a wiki page. Making it look decent is another thing. There are those very good at making pages look nice, and everyone can have access to the pages. Send me whatever you wish, and I'll get it on a wiki page. [With an edit here and/or there.] We'll set up parent and child pages, so there can be a separate announcement page, for example. Who's on or has access to the wiki now?
Pot Luck 2008 field set! Based on current 365 day ratings of all public games, the seeds are as follows: 1. Charles Daniel (Chucky D!) 2. Joe Joyce (MJ the 3rd!) 3. Carlos Carlos ( C squared ) 4. Graeme Neatham ( Grayhawke ) 5. George Duke ( Duke ) 6. Jejujeju (the Jej) 7. Donut Donut ( D-nut ) 8. Juan Rodriguez ( J-Rod ) (nicknames may be edited, no offense intended) Pool A will be the 1, 3, 5 and 7 seeds: Charles, Carlos, George and Donut Pool B will be the 2, 4, 6 and 8 seeds: Joe, Graeme, Jeju and Juan Games must be named by April 14th. Games named prior to April 14th MAY be changed prior to April 14th. April 14th to April 21st will be the veto period. Any game receiving 4 vetoes will be bounced and the person who brought the vetoed game will have 48 hours to replace it. From the time the replacement has been named, there will be another 1 week veto period on the replacement game. Once all games are approved, the game schedule (within each pool) will be randomly assigned. Joe¡¦any chance you can set up a wikipage if I do the text and send it to you? Or you could do it if you like? Or Carlos, are you able to do that?
Ok now here. There will ONLY be a photo if someone takes a snapshot of the winner. As far as prizes go, you guys need to get me something a film studio would want to film. I need wacky nicknames (or at least something with a pasty name twice :-)). We have a Double Donut. Anyone else want to be DanishDanish (please, I hope no offense here. I already ticked off several chess grandmasters)? I also need some sort of page to point this two. I will get something up on BoardGameGeek also, once we are set, but please get me a page now with the info for it. If it is this thread, let me know. I would personally rather have a page with just the event info, and no information on how many are participating. Every event on the Tour schedule should look alike in this regard. Just my 2 cents...
Joe, of course you are right. Let me know if you need help building your pedestal. :)
Hey, Gary - I meant it would be the first IAGO World Tour ChessVariants Athlon Event. That means the winner would get name and maybe even picture on Boardgamegeek, for example! How can a mere cash prize compare with that? And I know what you mean about being booked-up recently. I'm still playing 2 T#3 games, both tough, for somewhere between 3rd and 5th or 7th places. Us also-rans are still running. [Congrats on the win, it's quite spectacular - what, 23 or 24 games in 2 tournaments with at least 20 wins and no losses! Heck, probably better than that.] And I'm still trying to finish the 45-46 contest - hope to get that done within a month or so. Eh, I guess we can let you slide for this one ;-) Anyway, I really like the idea of a potluck, and things like Invent&Play, so I'm doing all I can to encourage them. And I think I can squeeze in a few more games. [Right! I should know better, but I never seem to.] Enjoy. Joe
Would not the CV Tournaments be considered such events? After all, they had lots of players, lots of games, and I think each started in one year and finished in the next. The first two even had cash prizes.
PotLuck seems more like 'Bring games you like and lets have a round robin.' Nothing wrong with that of course. And I applaud the concept and implementation. It is a great idea and I'd loved to have participated but I am currently a bit exhausted from CV3, playing in an ongoing Chess Thematic Tournament, and playing in a final round of a Shogi Tournament.
At any rate, I wish all participants the best in this PotLuck event and I will be watching from the side... with great curiosity as to the outcome.
Now we are 8. :-) Great! The first game I'd like to bring is the original Grand Shatranj. After that, I'm having a hard time deciding, and am getting darned greedy. And Atlantean Barroom Shatranj should be a quicker game than Great Shatranj. Was going to stop right there, but Lemurian Shatranj would also be faster than Great Shatranj, and now I've already mentioned 4 games. So I'd drop Great Shatranj [and mention Joshua Morris' Kozune]... help! I'm guessing we might change our picks before the veto period begins, and maybe we could put this on a wiki page. [Especially if it's to be an IAGO World Tour event, it should/*has to* have its very own page. I believe this event would be considered a Chessvariants Email Athlon Event - the first ever.] Anyway, my choices [for now, anyhow] are: Atlantean Barroom Shatranj Grand Shatranj D Lemurian Shatranj Joe
Please let me know what the final page will be that I can point the Tour calendar to regarding it?
juan rodriguez chooses : Bachelor Chess Switching Chess Hostage Chess
Pot Luck 2008! Registration Deadline has passed, 7 entrants. We are now at the stage where participants name the game or games they would like to play in the tournament. You may bring one, two or three games. Each game must be named by April 14th. From April 14th to April 21st there will be a veto period. Four veto votes will disqualify a game. The person who suggested that game will have an opportunity to name a replacement. Please don't veto until the veto period begins. To name your games, simply add a message to this thread with the game(s) you want to play. There is still room for one more, so if an eighth player wants to join, first to claim space is in.
Jeju, If you'll allow them, I'd like to bring these games to the table: Bachelor Chess Switching Chess Hostage Chess Thanks and good luck!
re: emailing all cvp members I do have a list, and would be willing to send out an email (probably emails, since I'd have to break it up into sections). I try not to send emails out very often, but am willing to do so in this case. Just let me know what you'd like to be in the email. Thanks!
Consider emailing all chessvariant members with an invitation to join the tournament. They may be many who have registered emails with this site but are quite inactive. And -- is anyone going to bring orthodox (FIDE) chess into this tournament?!
Reminder that Pot Luck 2008 registration will close at midnight GMT, April 7th. Currently have 7 players. Really hoping to add one, 3 or 5 more. Sounds like fun!

je ju, when you happened to finalize this, please make sure we have a web page people can land on to learn about the tournament, and have it link back to the IAGO World Tour site.
Excellent, George. Currently registered: jejujeju carlos carlos donut donut Joe Joyce Charles Daniel juan rodriguez George Duke Hoping to get 8, 10, 12 or more... Five more days to register
Okay, Jeju, I will bring Rococo and Altair and if a third required, t.b.d.
Currently registered: jejujeju carlos carlos donut donut Joe Joyce Charles Daniel juan rodriguez Hoping to get 8, 10, 12 or more George Duke wrote: 'We think two games in ''real time'' would be more exciting [with or without kibitzing] than any one whole tournament over months or year.' Agree with the statement, but know that I would not be able to commit the blocks of time needed for such an undertaking with any regularity. George, are you interested in joining the Pot Luck? We'd love to have you join us. As well as all others...c'mon folks, step right up and join!
Ok, you can finalize the details, and get this nailed down. Then decide whether or not it will be on. We can actually add it to the IAGO World Tour after it starts, it will just be late getting on. If it feels like it is done before November, that is good. Having it go into 2009 would be an issue though :-). Anyhow, I will let you finish up the details. All that is needed is that the event produces a winner, then I would need to know the number of players total (don't need report that anywhere else except in the Tour grand total), and also who won (their name) and their City and Country (possibly also State if in USA). Having a nickname is also cool, and can be added. Like saying 'Donut Donut' is the winner, but need the name :-). I would say nicknames are even encouraged for marketing purposes. A user name can serve as a nickname here.
