To me, this is such a natural rule. Why could a king in jeopardy not capture his own pieces to escape, just like he captures those of his opponent? Don't get me wrong, I love FIDE chess, but this seems like such a natural variant; modest, but significant.
Sorry about that badly worded comment. I meant that if your opponent has to capture to escape mate, he is still weakened.
It seems a very logical concept. It would prevent some of those 'smothered mates' but on the other hand, the opponent would still be weakened by having to capture their opponents to escape. I think I'll give it a go sometime
