I've just finished submitting a preset for Replacement Chess (besides a preset for Rifle Chess).

Has Replacement (or Putback) Chess ever been nominated as a Recognized variant on chessvariants.com? I'd think it would be (historically, anyway) popular enough to be a Recognized variant, having at least at one time often been played on both sides of the US-CAN border. The concept of replacement (as it is performed in this game) is also something of a simple yet unique signature for this game, afaik. Bombalot might possibly be another candidate for being a Recognized variant, especially if it's been played over-the-board in the US or other countries besides CAN. That's if any more Recognized variants are going to be added onto chessvariants.com anytime in future.

Fwiw, I recall Putback Chess was called bughouse by some players when I played it with them in the 1980s in Toronto, Canada. Those players preferred to use 'Double Chess' back then for what is now commonly called 'Bughouse'.

the game you are referring to is bughouse; it is mentioned on this page, altho hans did not provide a link to the bughouse page. on the bughouse page, he lists numerous alternative names to bughouse, altho 'double replacement chess' is not one of them.

I was disappointed there was no mention of what I've always heard called 'double replacement chess' where there are 2 teams of 2 players. Each member of the team plays a different color and when captures are made they are handed to the teammate to place anywhere on board (no promotions). This is played with 2 boards, 2 clocks and whoever wins (checkmate or time), their team wins. Great game!
