My Mint machine seems to have Java version 7, update 79; IcedTea-Web1.5; Firefox 40.0.3
I loaded up Ubuntu from my previous computer's harddrive, and I got one of Ed's apps working too. In my case, my installation of Ubuntu is old, and it is running an old version of Java. How recent is your version of Java? My version on Windows 7 is the latest, update 66 of version 8.
I have a desktop running Linux Mint, Firefox with IcedTea plugin. It doesn't work with Chromium. I also have a laptop running Ubuntu, Firefox I think again with IcedTea. I'll double check this later.
I simply can't get his applets to work. What is your setup?
Ed's applets still work on my machines (with a couple of warning messages to click through).
Due to being blocked by Java security, the Java applets for playing Chess variants no longer work. This affects Coffee Chinese Chess and all of Ed Friedlander's apps. So I have removed Java apps from the Play submenu. That leaves Game Courier as the main thing on the Play subdomain. So I decided to make the Play subdomain for Game Courier specifically. I moved the index page for Game Courier to the root folder of the subdomain, and I moved all the preset pages there too, as well as updating their URLs in the database. This will give better URLs to the games you can play on Game Courier. I am also considering changing the name of Game Courier to something that reflects the domain name, such as the Chess Variants Playroom. That gets "play" in the name, and it gives it a location name, which seems more suitable for a place on the web than a verb name does. I've also considered Playground, Playpen, and Playhouse. The first two seem a bit juvenile, and the third describes either a pretend house or a theater, rather than a place for playing. Also, I'm posting here, because the homepage for the subdomain is unindexed, and I cannot use the Edit link to fix this. This has something to do with the new site handling .htaccess differently. I may fix it later by bypassing the use of .htaccess for accessing certain pages.
