One thing you might try to make this game a reality -- a virtual reality,
anyway -- is a freeware game engine designed for making card games on-line
called Thoth. The engine doesn't enforce rules (so it's no competitor
for Zillions) but allows you to have cards with backs, dealt in hands,
with artwork, etc.

I don't have the link at the moment, but Google does.
