OK, it's an issue to handle with fen2, then. My mistake (and, admittedly, a rather obvious one).
I have learned that the color can be specified after the piece, so a piece's color can be changed on the fly in the ID's list (for example, in Seireigi, where promoted pieces in the Greenwade set are green). In this case, I want to specify only the color of the Flame, so the flaming chariots shown could be described with p=chariot-gflame&g=FF8000 (or something like it).
Of course, if it can't be done, then it can't be done, and that's that; I'll not worry about it.
(And of course the use of "grey" pieces that either player can move is more of a matter for rules-enforcing Game Courier presets.)
