Check out Symmetric Chess, our featured variant for March, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, Adrian Alvarez de la Campa.

Steward Chess

This variant allows the King to give additional 'King moves' to one other piece on the board.

Setup

As in orthodox chess.

Pieces

A Steward moves one square orthogonally without capturing or one square diagonally to capture. It also retains a Pawn's right to take two steps from the second rank. A Steward promotes (on the final rank) to Crowned Knight, Crowned Bishop or Crowned Rook only.

Rules

Follow all normal chess rules with the following changes.

1. In lieu of a move, a player may 'crown' any piece adjacent to the King. Only one 'crowned' piece per player is allowed on the board at a time.

2. Crowned Knights, Bishops and Rooks gain the ability to move like a King. A crowned Pawn becomes a Steward (described above).

3. If a player has a crowned piece on the board, and he crowns a new piece, the original crowned piece is automatically 'uncrowned' or returned to normal.

Notes

The Knight gains the most value from being crowned, and I anticipate that the most effective openings will include moving a Knight to e2/d2 for this purpose.
