to make a chess variant on 6 squares with 4 pieces is impossible, of
course. 

Whenever somebody does the impossible, they deserve many 'excellent'
ratings. Here is mine.

I will not suggest a Doublewide variation of the game because that would
just be silly.

Is Georg still alive? I sent him an e-mail asking for more information on Gufuu, and he never wrote back. His page hasn't been updated for several years. I hope he's still around.
