Contest to design a chess variant on 44 squares. Our annual N-squares chess variant design competition.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Yes, not all competing entries have been posted yet.

David Short wrote on Mon, May 3, 2004 08:58 PM EDT:
I hope you will allow my entry into the contest, even though technically
I submitted it about a week after the posted deadline. Since you haven't
finished posting the other entries, polling isn't going to be able to
start on time anyway, so what harm does it do to let mine in right
under the wire?

I want to thank Jeff Rients for making the OblongChess44 PBM preset. It's
quite unnerving now that I have two variants in the main category, but I
wish them both well.

When can we start voting, btw?

Anyone want to try a 45-<b>piece</b> variant contest next year?

Jeff Rients wrote on Sat, May 8, 2004 08:14 PM EDT:
45 pieces sounds like an interesting challenge!

Jared McComb wrote on Sat, May 8, 2004 09:21 PM EDT:
It sounds interessting, except that *some* of us have already started working on 45-space variants! *growls*

Jeff Rients wrote on Sat, May 8, 2004 10:05 PM EDT:
No reason why we couldn't do both. To keep roughly the same number of entries you could pare back each category (45-square and 45-piece) to just one entry per inventor.

Mark Thompson wrote on Sat, May 8, 2004 10:15 PM EDT:
Would that be 45 pieces per army, or 45 pieces among all armies?

Jeff Rients wrote on Sun, May 9, 2004 08:27 AM EDT:
I don't know the original intent of the suggestion, but I was thinking 45 pieces total. That odd 45th piece is where meat of the challenge would lie, I think.

Hans Bodlaender wrote on Mon, May 10, 2004 11:12 AM EDT:
Here is the first, non competing entry for the 45 pieces contest: queenless but further standard three player chess...

Hans Bodlaender wrote on Mon, May 10, 2004 11:12 AM EDT:
Should we accept an entry that was a few days late?

   Hans

Jeff Rients wrote on Mon, May 10, 2004 11:33 AM EDT:
Yes, please accept a late entry.

(Last night while engaged in a lengthy car drive I came up with an idea
for a 45 piece variant that is a combination of Hnefatafl and Chaturanga.)

Was Epsilon Eridani received?. This game has not been posted yet, it is a non-competing entry, but it is good if it is included, I like it. I think that other games have not been posted, too. (Peter Leyva´s games?, and pehaps other games sent by other people, I don´t know)

Peter Aronson wrote on Mon, May 10, 2004 05:51 PM EDT:
Roberto, we've received <u>Epsilon Eridani</u>, but as you guessed, we've been trying to get everything done for the competing entries first.

Roberto Lavieri wrote on Mon, May 10, 2004 08:37 PM EDT:
It exists a Preset for Symmetron!44, as you can see in the game Page, the Preset was made by Antoine Fouuriere, and we have used it in an interesting game test. Nevertheless, it does not appear in the list of Games in Courier. Why?. Please, add this Preset to the list of available games in the Courier system

Hans, <p>'standard three-player chess'? Which variant is that?

Hans Bodlaender wrote on Wed, May 12, 2004 07:52 AM EDT:
Like on <a href='http://www.chessvariants.com/multiplayer.dir/3pl2.html'>http://www.chessvariants.com/multiplayer.dir/3pl2.html</a>. That type of three player chess variant is probably more than a century old ... <p> We may need another webpage on this variant, with some diving into the ECV first...

Hans Bodlaender wrote on Wed, May 12, 2004 07:55 AM EDT:
One to go: Mini Slanted Escalator Chess by David Short needs a webpage. If we have that, I think that we have all variants, except for some non-competing ones. <p> I'll wait till the end of May to see what variants can go to the main category, before starting the official voting.

Doug Chatham wrote on Thu, May 13, 2004 07:40 AM EDT:
Hans, <p>What's happened to my entry: Los Alamos Extinction Chess With Bunkers?

Hans Bodlaender wrote on Thu, May 13, 2004 07:42 AM EDT:
Doug,

I assume this was lost due to a mailing problem. There were a few files
that didn't arrive at a certain time...

Please, send the file again.

 Hans

Peter Aronson wrote on Fri, May 14, 2004 05:49 PM EDT:
Hans, <p> <u>Mini Slanted Escalator Chess</u> now has a ZRF, and <u>PiRaTeKnIcS</u> now has a preset, and thus can be moved into the main category.

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Sat, May 15, 2004 05:14 AM EDT:
Hans, <p><u>Slide Chess</u> now has a zrf and can be moved to the main category. <br><u>Epsilon Eridani</u> has been added as a non-competing entry.

Ken Franklin wrote on Mon, May 17, 2004 11:29 AM EDT:
I don't know what the wide-spread tardiness is about! The 44 sq-contest
was open for over 4+ months, (after being announced well in advance). A
couple of just-late entries the week after ... yeah fine - of course,
slip
them in.

BUT now it's a whole month past the original due date. Should a REVISED
firm (tough, no exceptions) CUTOFF and a NEW RESTART VOTING period date
to
follow be set?

Hans Bodlaender wrote on Tue, May 18, 2004 02:56 AM EDT:
As there were many submissions sent in around April 21, it took a while before we managed to make a webpage of each of these. This now has done. To give all games a fair chance of getting to the first category, I wait till May 31, 2004 for assigning each game its definitive category. A two month voting period then starts June 1.

Jared McComb wrote on Tue, May 18, 2004 01:55 PM EDT:
If Regenbogen ends up being the only Extra entry, will it win by default or will it be disqualified and the category abandoned?
