Thanks for pointing that out. I think that just puting the Cannon back where it was should do the trick. The Elephant will be able to block Checkmate, and offer the Cannon a poor exchange for its own capture.
Umm, Charles, did you realize the new set-up is instant checkmate? You should move the Point forward one space, and move the Cannon to the Mao's file. I recommend making the Palace the 3 spaces near the Generals' corners and restricting the Elephant to its own side.
This page presumes familiarity with the piece images you're using. It needs a legend. You can mention which pieces go on which spaces or reuse the images when describing the pieces.
My goodness, you're right! Perhaps I should rethink this game. It would be interesting to hear what others who hav commented on this variant think.
I don't like this game that much. You have strengthened the royal and defensive pieces while decreasing the amount of offensive pieces. The Point is covered by the Rook, too, which is unlike Minishogi where it defends against the opponent's.
I was fearing that 1st move Cannon b2-e2 was always winning, but finaly Zillions computations showed that there were no such great advantage: Red is not taking the Elephant(after rook exchange), as it is a trap... Ce2,Ca5,Cxe6,Cxa1,Ha3,Cb1,Hb5,Mc5,Hc3,Cb6,Hd5,Cb1,Pa2,Mb6,Hc3,Cb2... So it's a very interesting variant.
I have posted the implementation to Zillions. It should be up by next Saturday. If anyone wishes an advance copy, just send me an email.
Yes, go ahead with a Zillions implementation by all means.
I have written a Zillions implementation for this game. It stills needs to be thoroughly play-tested. After a cursory run-through, to discover any syntax errors, the game appears to play quite nice. With Charles Gilman's permission, I can soon post it to the site.
A very nice reduction of XiangQi.
