The version of the board suggested by Daniel Roth may well be a good one,
but it would sever the variant from its theme. One option that I am
considering is reducing the size of the armies to the standard 16 -
including 1 Rook, 1 Prince, and 2 Bishops - so that Red would change
 from to

  PP --
  PP PP
PPNRBB -PPPNB
PPRNQI -PPPQI
  BK NK
  BI BR

It occurred to me that having only two Bishops on the same colour square
wouldn't matter after all because of Fusion. Fusion is in any case
necessary to give Knights access to all the board. Another alternative
would be to increase the Knights and not have Pawns or promotion at all,
for example:
  --
  -N
--NRBB
-NRNQI
  BK
  BI
I would be interested to receive feedback on which approach other members
think better.

Nice interesting game. But I would change the board a little bit.
Take the empty super squares on the outer side of the lanes and put them
inside of them. Then add a blue super square to fill the cap between the 4
moved super squares. The result is a cross inside of a big sharp (#) sign.
The super square rule prevents directly diagonal moves through the center
cross.

For lettering: Why not just use standard chess lettering (A-N and 1-14)?
