I've nearly completed a newer one-dimensional shogi game called Ito Shogi. Hopefully it will be a significant improvement in all areas.
*Bump*
In other words, since Mr. Rutherford asked for this variant to get more attention in a recent comment, I am commenting here to see what people think of this variant.
I will look at it late on, when I get a chance. I'm just settling down after a 4-day road trip.

Whenever someone asks me about 1D games, this is definitely one that I recommend. I think that most can find it an interesting game, not just Shogi variant players. I enjoyed coding this one for Zillions.
Hey, this seems really cool. I would like to hear comments from more people, or see if anyone with more computer skills than I would write a zillions file for it. Good job Mr. Rutherford
It looks like there might be an error in the text due to translation into HTML. The sentences '(These make drops weaker, so a king can’t always hold his bodyguards too close. However it also makes it impossible to mate a king who has moved forward with a single drop. Maneuvering is more important than dropping.-Pieces alternately promote and demote after every capture, as in micro-shogi.' should probably read as (These make drops weaker, so a king can’t always hold his bodyguards too close. However it also makes it impossible to mate a king who has moved forward with a single drop. Maneuvering is more important than dropping.) <bullet> Pieces alternately promote and demote after every capture, as in micro-shogi. Otherwise the alternating promotion/demotion rule is easy to miss. ^_^
Is anyone willing to write a zillions file for this now? I think it's the best 1-dimensional chess version so far.
This is a cool idea. Someone ought to write a Zillions of Games rules file for this game. (I might one at some point, but I'm getting a bit backed up.) Having Zillions play itself at 3 minutes a turn on a fast machine might expose any forced wins.
