I did find at least one game preceding my proposed game (which is currently awaiting confirmation) that uses the Friend, as well as the Orphan: UC-170-13, an expansion of Universal Chess. A related game, UC-170-17,  exists but doesn't really have a page here, though it does have a Game Courier preset.

Yeah, I'm hoping it doesn't take too long to get at least one or two of my games approved, so I can start posting this "Friendly Game of Chess."

I'm thinking of using a huge board (20x16?) with 2-4 Friends per side, otherwise loading both up with riders, bent sliders, long leapers, rifle capturers, and other pieces with crazy powers (like the Bodyguard). That, I think, would lead to some really crazy matches.

PS: My answer to your question of Orphan/Friend interaction is: both. An Orphan protecting a Friend, or a Friend attacking an Orphan, would pass on both its own abilities and those that it's borrowing.

I wonder, though, if a Friend can pass on moves to another Friend....

Per the page, the rule for this is the same as the rule for the Orphan: a Friend defending another friend passes on all the moves of its own defenders

The interesting question (raised by Charles wrt the Orphan and Joker) regards interaction of distinct mimics: what happens if an Orphan defends a friend? Does it pass on its attackers' powers or (my preferred option but more obscure, especially if applied recursively) does it lets the friend move as an orphan (and thus as any of its own attackers)?

In any case, whilst interesting, this page is a bit of an anomaly: afaict it's the only piece in the piececlopedia never (yet — pending your idea) to have been used in anything, game or even problem

I've seen them. Nice work.

I have also a full collection of chess variant pieces on thingiverse (Kazo65). 34 designs, now validated after 3D printing.

25 years later, and as far as I can tell, still nobody's tried putting a Friend into an actual game.

That may change soon enough; I find the piece intriguing -- intriguing enough that I designed a piece on Thingiverse, as part of this collection, and my brain is cooking up something for it (though I already have four unpublished submissions on the site, and two or three more ready to post when I can).

My apologies if this image does not load properly.

I wonder, though, if a Friend can pass on moves to another Friend....
