There is no queen, but 2 compounds. Missing description (9x9, Cells: 81) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

2 variants:
In almost chess white player have marshall instead queen. So, variant, where ne of players have queen and cardinal (as in modern ches), other player have marshal and cardinal.
Makruk variant. Bishop is replaced with makruk nobleman (silver general), cardinal is replaced with knight-silver compound, pawns starts on 3rd rank, promotes on opponent's third rank to marshal and knight-silver only.
I would like to call this 'Frolov chess', but there is variant with same name (invented by someone with same last name :)), variant of kingchess, where all pieces must be dropped before making normal moves.

Yes. You are right. I already made the correction.

If it's Ajax variant, shold'nt knight also have diagonal step?

The true ajax variation of 'There is no queen but two compounds' on a 9x8 board with reversed symmetry would be this:

Preset's URL:/play/pbm/play.php?game%3DThere+is+no+queen+but+two+compounds+-+Ajax+variation%26settings%3D9x8reversed

Definitevely, I would rather to play on a 9x8 board.

I agree with Carlos, Daniil's proposal is quite interesting...

I would play it on 9x9, it reminds me of Modern Chess (with reverse symmetry).

Of course, Bishops would start up on same color squares. You are using Carlos Cetina's Bishop Conversion Rule to solve that problem.

Two other options you can try are:
- Bishop Adjustment Rule
- Using Ajax Bishops instead of regular Bishops

What do you call this variant? Frolov Chess!

I present: Frolov Chess - Ajax Bishops Variation

With Ajax Bishops (Bishops get an additional one-step non-capturing orthogonal move (Wazir)).

I like the name Chancellor better for the N+R, and ArcBishop for the N+B compound.

Like Ajax Chess, this variation uses reverse symmetry. The initial placement of Chancellor and ArcBishop can be interchanged, but reversed symmetry must be maintained.

Pawns can move one or two steps at any time until reaching (but including) the middle (5th) rank. This will create several new opportunities for en passant captures.

This means that a white pawn at e5 can play e5-e6 or e5-e7; but a white pawn at e6 can only play e6-e7.

Does anyone want to play a game?

RN and BN without queen is, of course, not only combination, wich was not used before, as i stated before. Here are all other possible combinations (if no more than 2 pieces of same kind), wich was not used yet (at least, i don't know these games):
1RN, 2BN;
1RN, 2 Q;
1BN, 2RN;
1BN, 2 Q;
2Q, 1RN, 1BN;
2Q, 2BN;
2Q, 2RN;
2BN, 2RN;
2BN, 1Q, 1RN;
2RN, 1Q, 1BN;
1BN, 2Q, 2RN;
1RN, 2Q, 2BN;
2RN, 2Q, 2BN.

Of corse, i'll not post page for any of these games, game with RN and BN without queen is one of most interesting variants (and last one, with 2 of each pieces, is interesting to). This list can be extended by adding RNB (amazone/maharaja).

Preset's URL starting out from a reversed symmetric setup:

Daniil: Your proposal seems to me very interesting. I have edited a preset for playing on a 9x8 board.

Preset's URL: /play/pbm/play.php?game%3DThere+is+no+queen+but+two+compounds%26settings%3D9x8

Please let me know if you would like to try it.
