If you look at the earlier comments on this page, you will see that this was first pointed out in 2003. It may be assumed that the name was changed after that but the filename for the page remained the same.

WHy is this page called "StealthChess"? (Look at the URL.) That's misleading - since there is an actual game (like boxed and sold) called Stealth Chess - and this is nothing like that. Also, I can't find the rules for actual Stealth Chess anywhere.

One suggestion: Make a game on a bigger board (10x10, 12x12 or something like that) and with some restrictions on the 'combination pieces' ; a piece may only merge with one piece, two pieces etc., add some pieces like the dabbabah, the alifil etc, make the queen only accessable with merging, add a man (non-royal king) instead of the queen et cetera...

Thank you for your kind words, Hafsteinn. As I've explained on my main page, I no longer rate this game so highly. Fergus Duniho made some games based on a similar concept, but much better designed and implemented, so I'd rather you played his.

I feel flattered by all the 'excellent' grades people gave me, but at that time, there were not so many games posted on the CV pages so people didn't have much to compare it with. I would probably rate it as 'below average' or 'poor' myself now, which is why I've never programmed it and have never made any diagrams. But this was my first serious attempt to design a game, and I've left this page standing to remind me of where I came from.

I did use the idea of pieces merging with other pieces for many of my other games (Diamond Chess 306, Dürer's Chess, Matrix Chess). You could saw that I see this game, not so much as a game worth playing, but as more of a source of raw material for other games.

Some of the combined pieces look a bit to complicated to me. I'd like some diagrams to help me understand these pieces. I agree with Tim, the pegasus sounds simply too strong. But I still like this idea, and would like to play it. I'm out looking for extra pieces...

If I am reading the instructions correctly, The Aeroplane combines the moves of the FIDE Rook and the Cannon of Changgi (Korean Chess).

I invented this game a couple of years ago. Now that I'm a bit older and
have had a bit more experience with chess variants of all types, I've
concluded that while the basic concept is good, some of the details are
cumbersome and need to be streamlined. In particular, some of the
multiple combinations (super pieces) are unwieldy. Accordingly, I will be
releasing a streamlined version of the game in the near future.

A sneak preview:

1. Pieces will not only absorb the powers of a captured enemy, but will
will also be able to merge with friendly pieces, subject to certain
restrictions. (I've taken a leaf out of the book of some of Fergus
Duniho's games).

2. The king and queen will be abolished from the initial setup and will be
available only as combined pieces. In their place will stand the wazir and
the ferz. In the present setup, the merger of the queen with any other
piece creates just too formidable a piece which renders the game virtually
unplayable.

3. The stealth bombers will be retained, but the 'super pieces' will be
abolished.

4. The game will run in two 'personalities.' In Personality A, no more
than two pieces will be able to combine at a time. Personality B will
allow for the combination of any number of pieces.

5. The game will be adapted for hexagonal, circular, and three-dimensional
boards, among others.

Stay tuned!

May be the name for a new variant is not so good. A completely different
chess variant which also called 'Stealth Chess' already exists:

I'd imagine the pegasus to be rather overpowered. Would we be able to get a zrf file for this?
