It seems a very logical concept.  It would prevent some of those
'smothered mates' but on the other hand, the opponent would still be
weakened by having to capture their opponents to escape.

To me, this is such a natural rule. Why could a king in jeopardy not capture his own pieces to escape, just like he captures those of his opponent? Don't get me wrong, I love FIDE chess, but this seems like such a natural variant; modest, but significant.

One cool variant could be made where
1-You can capture your own pieces.
2-You can't capture the king
3-Its possible to put your king in check with friendly pieces. So you need to avoid it.

In this variant both players would need to start by capturing their own
