The fruitfulness of the 'modest variant' concept is finely illustrated by
Adjutant Chess:

Merely by adding extra corner squares (i.e., the Gustavian board) and
adding extended castling, we get a wholly new strategical situation, which
facilitates pawn storms on the wings, and hence the play becomes more
attacking.

In addition, if we add Adjutant pieces (in a particular variant), then
exciting new combinations will crop up. It is entertaining to play against
a ZoG program and try the capabilities of a new piece, such as the
Adjutant.
