I plan to submit a variant for this new prime numbers contest, but it will take some time before I submit my entry. Is there a deadline for this? Did anyone win the 47 square one? (And btw, is there a preset for Charles Gilman's entry?)

I was asking to submit more variants, which can have any prime number of squares rather than 47. However, due to a glitch in the entry system, the title on the What's New page still displays it as 47 contest. Could an editor please fix this?

Joe has informed me that he did not have a serious entry to the competition and it is thus now marked as such. The contest is now almost hermetically sealed and play will commence ASAP.

The rhino may capture on every square it lands on during its move. The specific controlling rule is: 'During the charge, it captures on each square without stopping.' Thus it could capture as many as 6 pieces in 3 turns, 1 on the first, 2 more on the second, and 3 more on the third turn.

I think bare Lion should be a win condition. And by the way, you don't need to send me an email whenever I have an incomplete game entry form. I do that so it can be saved in case I have to do something. ;)

Hey, John, I looked for the Murray Lion icon that gave me the board, but
it's not in the Alfaerie: Many piece set, so I did the best I could.
There is a specific icon for this piece, but it's a double-guard piece
with a gray band around its top. It would look terrible with the other

As far as changing its move, well, the lion is the king of the jungle, and
this piece is the most powerful in the game. It's not the fastest, or the
strongest, but over all, it's the best. Using the suggested movement for
the piece, reducing it to one of the crowd, would be as thematically wrong
as using the double-guard piece in the preset would be. 

Now, this last part is just for fun, and concerns my comments and game
rules.  :-)

Just as a general question, why would a name be important in a design
contest? One might hope games would be judged on merit then. Each would be
approached without preconceptions.
John, my name is buried here and there. One has only to look in the right
places to see it. You may also figure it out from the game design. Check
the basic elements, and don't forget to look for random clues. Enjoy! ;-)

It would be nice if you supplied a name. I also recommmend that you use either a FIDE King for the Lion, a Murray Lion, or make it only move one or 2 squares orthogonally or diagonally, jumping, but not changing direction.

Here is my unofficial entry into your contest - unofficial because it
hasn't yet been playtested, of course. Thought I had a pretty unique
board idea, what a mistake - saw your 47-square game. Figure I'll post
this before anyone else comes up with the board, and 'polish' it
later... ;-)

Running a Chess variant design contest is a high responsibility task that should include the following activities: (1) Editing entries to make sure that they clearly and explicitly spell out the rules. This involves communicating with entrants and editing pages written by others. (2) Making sure that people can play the games. This can include writing ZRF files and Game Courier presets for entrants who can't do it themselves. (3) Running a secret ballot.
