Can the new piece move through check? I note that in Superking (corresponding variant of FIDE Chess) it cannot, by analogy with FIDE Kings not being able to castle through check.

Fergus Duniho's 'Caïssa Britannia' has a royal Queen and nonroyal Prince Consort (moves like a King). Queens may not face each other in that game, also the rules prohibit moving through check.

It's weak piece, it capture only orthogonaly-adjecent piece, and it's not only royal piece, so, i think, prohibition of crossing check is not necessary.
