Your use of the expression 'Chess variant construction sets' clearly doesn't refer to the craft project I've described as a Chess Variant Construction Set. John William Brown wrote A Critique of David Howe’s CV Construction Set Proposal, which seems to refer to what you're mentioning, but David Howe called it A Chess-like Variant Construction Set.
