Are pieces moving out of Z5 required to be using diagonal moves? Is a pawn on Z5 stuck unless it can capture? Can a knight on Z5 ever move again?

I appreciate your attempt to represent 65 Square Chess. It certainly does have a certain charm in that it depicts the relationship of the middle four squares perfectly, but perhaps at the expense of other aspects. In 65 Square Chess, f4 connects to e5 and d4 connects to c5. This is not immediately apparent from your board.

How about this board? It is easier to visualize what's going on. and if
you never use the * file and rank, it might serve as a normal chess board.
(it uses the number 65 for the square, like e4-65 )

It is a little ugly though. Can use a recolouring.
