Very kewl looking pieces you got there! I don't understand a thing past move 13 of that game there. Way too complicated for me. Does the Vortex program play Janus Chess at all? That's my game! Very nice site by the way have to give ya credit for that.

The player on http://www.GothicChessLive.com known as M_TAL has always been
a very tough opponent. He is George Tsavadaris from Thessaloniki, Greece.
George is not only a 'regular chess' enthusiast, he is a strong
'anti-computer' player, in chess and Gothic Chess. Over the past 3
years, he has given me sample games where he has been able to defeat
Gothic Vortex. Today, though a bit rusty, he was finally overwhelemed by
Vortex. While I am sure he will be back strong, here is that game, played
at G/30 + 15:

Here is a link to a page with some of the more interesting endgame database
positions that have been 'mined' so far. The reason Gothic Vortex is so
strong in the endgame is that these positions, when encountered during the
search, are fed back down the game tree.

http://www.gothicchess.com/javascript_endings.html

So, Vortex can see that 'Mate in 268' position from a distance if it is
playing in a Queen + Pawn endgame. In the case with SMIRF, it saw a very
long win for 2 pawns over a Knight, even when the material on the board
was 6 pawns for black and 1 Knight + 3 pawns for white.

cv editor wrote on Thu, Aug 31, 2006 01:52 PM UTC:

Ed Trice writes about a game of Vortex vs. SMIRF

Vortex had an opening advantage against SMIRF, which it consolidated into a few pawns worth of material by the middlegame. As the early endgame approached, this advantage was significant.

But what was strange was that Vortex traded this advantage almost completely away, while announcing mate in 143!

I could not believe this, and I think Reinhard could not believe this either. Vortex had only pawns in the end, and SMIRF had a Knight + fewer pawns, yet Vortex did win a very long checkmate!

This is one 'problem' with very large endgame tablebases. The program will throw away material, in this case about 4 pawns worth, in order to announce 'mate in X.'

It may be that Vortex could have mated sooner by holding onto the material, but the nominal depth was nowhere near this, while the endgame mates could not be avoided.

Here is the game link and the game:
