Peter: your 'EITHER-OR' checkmate proposal raises many interesting possibilities beyond this page. Since games will often be won by forking your opponent's two royal pieces, you can consider variants where both royal pieces are powerful. For example, remove the Kings from FIDE chess and give two royal Queens to White and two royal Chancellors (R+N) to Black. A royal Chancellor may turn out to be slightly stronger than a royal Queen in this game.
This sort of rule is completely different from the 'checkmate the last surviving royal piece' rules in variants like Triumvirate Chess.

Dom -- True, checkmate of the Amazon (General) is nearly impossible, but then again, you could not exchange the General or put it in a position where it could be captured; so, that does limit its power. On the other hand, attacking a position defended by the General with another General would not be feasible. (By the way, by convention authors do not rate their own pages -- no big deal -- I edited your comment to 'None'.)

I dont think its as good idea to target 2 royals. It would be very hard to
checkmate the General (Amazon) till u get to the endgame.

Its feasible to have the Generals in 10x8 variation just leads to more
tactical play and sacrifices :)

Usually, the Amazon (or General as you have called it) is considered to be too powerful to use in most variants this size. Has your play experiance demonstrated otherwise?
An amusing thought occurs to me -- how much would an Amazon/General be weakened if you made it royal, and the made the goal of the game to checkmate either the Amazon or the King? Would it balance the piece?
