I rather like the idea.  Assuming fairly normal piece moves.

  I would expand the piece set to start some fairy pieces on the empty faces, myself.

Plying chess on cube is good idea. By the way, i have an interesting idea: either player can also move cells with pieces according to Rubic's Cube rules! What do you think about it?
