One clarification is needed. If you check one king, such that the only way for that King to get out of check, is to put the other King in check, is the game won? I assume the answer is yes.

My understanding of 'checkmate' is that no move is available taking the
PLAYER out of check. A move merely changing which of two Kings is in check
is not a move out of check. This is certainly implicit in my
two-rulers-aside games (Magna Carta, Sachsenschach, Unionschach, some
forms of Tunnelchess).
	Here's another question. The sample game has the Bishops on
opposite-colour squares. Is this a requirement?

The Bishops are placed on opposite-colored squares, like in Fischer Random Chess.
