I am confused about this rule involving the pawn promotion / king placement

The Rule reads "Promoting a pawn: You can move (rather than drop) a pawn onto an eighth-rank square, but only if your opponent's prison contains a queen, rook, bishop or knight. The pawn at once vacates the square, going into the prison. You then carry out the promotion by filling the vacated square with whichever you choose of the queen, rook, bishop or knight. [Note: When there is no such piece in your opponent's prison, any seventh-rank pawn of yours cannot attack the squares diagonally in front on it since it cannot move there. If standing on such a square, your opponent's king is not checked by the pawn. However, until the king moves off the square no queen, rook, bishop or knight of yours can be captured because capturing any such piece would put the king into check.]"

I understand these points.  Pawns cannot be dropped onto a promotion rank.    Pawns can be moved onto a promotion rank only if the opponents prison has a Q, R, B, N in it..   I think I understand that a 7th rank pawn cannot 'check' a K , or capture another piece, that sits diagonally to it on the 8th rank if a Q, R, B, nor N are in the prison to promote to.

Clarification number 1:  Thus...the pawn cannot move the 8th rank.  It is stuck on the 7th rank....correct?

Clarification number 2:  This "However, until the king moves off the square no queen, rook, bishop or knight of yours can be captured because capturing any such piece would put the king into check"   Meaning?  This is what I am really not understanding.... :/

thank you!

As I understand it, that means that a player who doesn't have an enemy non-pawn in the prison and has his king on his home rank diagonally in front of an enemy pawn (e.g. White king on e1 and black pawn on d2 - according to the rules not check because the pawn cannot promote and thus cannot move to its back rank or give check there) cannot then capture an enemy non-pawn because the enemy pawn would then be able to move to the last rank and thus capture the king - i.e. capturing an enemy non-pawn in such a case amounts to moving into check.
