Unfortunately, browsers getting pwned is a common problem. I have this issue right now on my wife's Windows machine - popups and ads that are certainly not coming from the page she's visiting. And full scans with both Webroot and MalwareBytes turned up no infections :( I haven't seen this happen on a Linux machine, though, and I run no AV software at all on them.
