Mats, I applaud your position. I just don't hold with it for everyone. Many enjoy the traditions; it gives them a connection to the game on a second level and provides a richer and deeper experience for them. Others, myself among them, don't see it that way. I will likely play XiangQi a limited number of times, and not at the highest level, so the investment of time and effort is not worth it to me now. If I were to enjoy it a lot and become good, then I would likely learn the Chinese pieces because that would open up a new world of players for me, living in greater NYC. Barring that rather unlikely circumstance... Please note I do not disparage either position. I do however prefer my own. :)
