Now you mention it I recall other examples of other things that contain pieces: the ships in David Jagger's PiRaTeKnIcS, the trains in Ralph Betza's PASGL 312 Chess and François Tremblay's Subway Chess, and the Trojan Horses in Gary Gifford's Shatranj of Troy. Some of these can capture in their own right, of course, but others need something 'on board' them.
