Keeping the moves to a simple step was not only because of the compact nature of the 4x4x4 field but also to not over-tax the brains of players. After all, the capture methods of this game are intricate enough. ;-)

Rithmomachia was the game of scholars. A way of proving and improving their knowledge of numbers.
