In my game here, I want to capture En Passant.  It does not show as a legal move, although if I tell it to make the move anyway, it does work.

🕸Fergus Duniho wrote on Sat, Jan 11, 2020 08:27 PM UTC:

That's now fixed. The function was testing whether a rankname equalled a filename, which would always return false. It was supposed to compare the ranknames of two coordinates.

Hannibal Chess. Chess with added Modern Elephants (ferz-alfil compound) on 10x8 board.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

I'm running analysis on the current Hanibal array now, then I'll try my alternate array.  This will take several days.  It requires a lot of CPU power, and at the moment the process is fairly manual.

I'm not sure how well it would work for really large boards or lots of pieces.  My guess is that the larger the number of legal moves, the more games it would take to differentiate between positions.  I don't really know yet just how many games are needed to drive down the margin of error sufficeintly.

If we do find a better array, I personally wouldn't change the name.  37 games of Opulent have been played and I'm changing the array.  I'll make a note in the game description about what the original setup was and why I changed it but that's about it.  I don't consider a change of array to be a new game.

Nice video!

To answer your question, sure, I'd like to have a version for mobile devices, but it would not be simple.  All the user interface code would probably have to be changed and I do not know anything about mobile development.  I could learn, but there are so many things I want to do.  (One of the next things I plan to do is support hexagonal chess - that I know how to do.)  It would be nice if someone who had experience with mobile development took that on.

New pieces in TenCubed Chess [Subject Thread] [Add Response]
Greg Strong wrote on Sun, Jan 12, 2020 08:02 PM UTC:

One of these pieces, the diagonal one (is that the Zanny?) was built in with the name 'Free Padwar' (a piece from Jetan.)  I am adding the other one as 'Free Warrior'.  It is possible to create it in the scripting language, but since the Padwars (both Free and Chained) are built in, the Jetan Warriors should be also for completeness.

Is the only change to Ten Cubed the addition of these two pieces?  What should this new game be called?  And who invended it?

I came up with these changes. Yes, this is Zanny. Ten Cubed already has chess pieces from Capoblanca and Omega chess, and I think that 2 pieces from 100-cell chess by Vsevolod Dubrovsky will not interfere with it. And you can call Ten Cubed extended.

Sorry guys but I don't see any video.

Kevin, would you consider electing among several eligible initial position, hannibal chess 2  for example(akin to fisher 960 )?! Why choose when you can enrich?

Also I'd really perfer this elephant, but this is probably a matter of taste:

x              x

    x     x

    mEm

    x     x

x              x

Hi Aurelian

This may belong under the Hannibal Chess thread; I'd consider multiple setup positions for any number of my CV inventions at some point, once I'm sure I know how to get that available to Game Courier (GC) play.

I think the type of elephant you've diagrammed is known as the lieutenant piece in Spartan Chess (that is, it's a ferfil that also has available to it non-capturing moves one step left or right orthogonally, if I understand the notation right). I've used that piece type already in a CV invention of mine (called Wide Chess, 12x8, hardly played yet - although I played you a game of it long ago). I'm not sure it would make Hannibal Chess (the way it stands) at least as playable, or more popular, in GC play - perhaps the straight ferfils, when in the current setup, are already pretty potent (though I know I mentioned people on the whole seem to prefer adding in powerful pieces, in CVs).

One other thing I concluded about popular CVs on GC from cursory study of the 1200+ GC games played list is that the most popular CVs on GC tend not to have many asymmetric-moving pieces (if any at all) in their setups; IMO, this is in line with Fergus' suggested guidelines for trying to design good CVs. Someone I've chatted with once told me they don't like to 'fight against their own pieces' (as opposed to those of the opponent), though they didn't like even Nightriders (or Waffles [WA]{!}) for that reason. Maybe it was mostly their own viewpoint, as Nightriders seem fairly popular with players, and not too irregular, perhaps.

Kevin!...

About game courier just ask me and I'l' do it. It is fine for me!...

I'll also teach you how!...

Yes that type of elelphant it is the lieutenenat of spartan chess. Or "the captain" I'm not sure. I like it because it is closer in value to the knight. Also the non square nature of the board helps. An alternative for another game (as you used in wide chess which we have played once) is the waffle. I think a lieutenant game and a waffle game would be more interesting than the 12x8 one! That is my opinion.

💡📝Kevin Pacey wrote on Wed, Jan 15, 2020 08:38 AM UTC:

Thanks for rating the game (I've only had one other game of mine rated so far - one not on GC - and it was rated average, too).

A while back I made a preset for (10x8) 'Waffle Chess', a CV idea of mine that otherwise used the FIDE army. So far I only tried it against Greg and Joe. I tried to avoid it, but I found I needed to use a fast-castling rule-set of mine (from Wide Chess) to help make the game quite playable (IMO). We could play a game of that CV sometime soon, if I send you a personal invitation and you accept.

I have to sleep now - take care!

edit: Here's a 10x8 CV that uses Waffles in addition to the chess army, followed by a 10x8 CV that uses WADs (aka Champions):

Thanks, Greg, for answering. Hopefully soon some mobile apps developer could join and help in your ChessV undertaking.

I'm sorry to tell you that I have found these bugs:

1. In Ministers Chess setup the i-rook and the h-knight from White side are switched.

2. In Sac Chess both kings cannot castle.

3. When rotating the boards the numerical coordinates remain unchanged.

4. In Gross Chess the window size does not fit proportionally to the PC screen.

Aside of that, I'm enjoying immensely your masterpiece!

📝Greg Strong wrote on Fri, Jan 17, 2020 01:24 AM UTC:

Hi, Carlos.  Thank you for finding and reporting these.  Good catches!

I was able to fix numbers 1, 2, and 3 in just a few minutes.

Unfortunately, #4 is not really a bug.  The chess board display does not scale - the resolution of your screen must be large enough to accomodate it.  Perhaps your screen resolution is too low to fit a 12 x 12 board (or you have a zoom setting turned on.)  I want to improve this, part of which will be using the scalable vector graphics that H. G. made.  Currently the piece graphics are bitmaps so they would not scale well.  Some option to shrink would be nice anyway, but it will not make it into this version.

But if you find any other bugs, please let me know :)  I am going out of town for a few days and plan to make an official release of 2.2 when I get back if no new issues have been discovered.

It seems a member trying to change his email address might not work - I've tried to change mine but have not received the necessary email to the new address with a link needed for confirmation.

Could somebody check this, and also a backup hasn't been done for some days now.

If somebody could kindly sort these two things out - thanks.

I can't see anything  - can one of the site's editors simply change it to the new address if I give them this?
