When playing with amatuers I often say, 'never trust your partner to protect your pieces'. Generally I will avoid risky assaults that are dependent on my partner's help, I have lost too many men that way. On the other hand, if your partner is a very good chess player then the co-operative double attacks are what make this game so much fun.

Its called REGICIDE RULES, the king must be actually captured rather than just check-mated. Even when check-mated a player still gets to make a move even if moving into check, and sometimes check-mate can be evaded, it is intense.
