I'm only on my second game of this, but it is already my favorite Chessgi-type game; elegant, fun, and very playable.

Dead Ringers Chess. Double chess game with twin pieces that are captured simultaneously. (2x(8x8), Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Thanks for the comments, Stephen. Your interpretation of the rules are correct, and check and checkmate do not apply.

I am also going to add the variant rule (discussed below) to the page and add a new preset.

Canoness Chess. Chess with Cannons and Canonesses (Vaos) on a differently-shaped board. (10x10, Cells: 88) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Thanks for commenting.

I'm sure there are many variants that include the Cannon and/or Vao among Western pieces. I mention two of them in the introduction above. The variant Yáng Qí for example, which is of course more ambitious than mine. I don't know of any, however, that use the Morley-shaped board.

And Pawns might look nice on those squares, and I indeed tested the game with them, but they allow the Canoness/Bishop pairs to attack them almost immediately, which I think hampers opening play.

Thank you! It would be a good idea to put a link to the game logs on this page; I just wish I knew how... Anyway, let me know if you're up for a game... : )

I've only begun a game of this, but it seems to be a wonderful game. I've never seen a variant that plays so differently from orthodox chess with such elegant, intuitive rules. I have a second invitation open if anyone is interested.

I'm currently playtesting a new game, in which pieces move one square south after their normal move. I had thought of naming it Gravity Chess, but there is already a game with that name. I'm tentatively calling it 2g Chess, but the g could be confused with grams. And One Step Back Chess is a little boring. So...any suggestions for a better name?

Here is the game log.

Normally in chess you are allowed as many Queen (or other piece) promotions as you want, regardless of what has been captured.

Landslide Chess...I like it. Thanks Greg!

Adrian Alvarez de la Campa wrote on Sat, Oct 14, 2006 06:17 AM UTC:
The only way a King can advance to the next rank is by using another piece as a 'stepping stone' and moving diagonally in front of it.

The Pawn on the other hand is the one piece with adjusted movement ability: it captures normally but now it moves two squares forward without capturing and can jump over an intervening piece. This means of course that Pawns must be blocked from two squares away, not one.

One interesting result of the landslide effect is that Pawns in many cases will defend each other side-by-side instead of in the traditional Pawn chain.

Steward Chess. Kings are able to "crown" pieces, giving them extra moves. (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Extinction Chess is a great game of course, but the shorter games it usually provides made me think of combining it with Brotherhood Chess, a slower-than-normal game.

Anyway, here's the Game Courier preset I made for this.

Thank you for your (too kind) comments.

I like your idea! If I'm interpreting it correctly: A capture may only occur on the last move of a turn.

I can add your variant on this page unless you'd like to make a new page for it.
