|The great chess master and world champion Jose Raul Capablanca (1888-1942). The picture of Capablanca is from Palle Mathiasen's World Chess Champions site.
<p>José Raúl Capablanca (1888-1942) was born in Cuba, the second surviving son of an army officer.
He learned the moves at 4 years old by watching his father play.
Capablanca refused to study chess and he never read chess books or studied chess openings. Becoming the World Champion despite this is evidence that he was possibly one of the greatest natural chess players that ever lived.
