In Royal Queens Chess, each player starts the game with 32 pieces total- 8 queens, 8 rooks, 8 bishops, 8 frozen horizons. All 8 queens are royal on an extinction basis. The frozen horizons are buffer pieces which can be promoted at the cost of a move.
