Dipole Chess

Introduction

This game is a cross between Chess and Mark Steere's Dipole.  It originated
from the game Forwards Chess:

Due to Forwards reminded of me of Dipole, it was natural to try to consider
adapting rules to Dipole to Forwards and Normal (FIDE) Chess.

Setup

Same as in normal (FIDE) Chess.

Pieces

Same as in normal (FIDE) Chess.

Rules

During a turn, players alternate turns moving pieces forward, including
capturing.  A piece must end its turn on a space that is closer to the last
row then when it started (Last row being where their pawn promotes). 
Normally this would consist of a move straight forward, or diagonally
forward.  In the case of the knight piece, it is as done normally, except
that it loses 4 of its moves (those that would move it further away from
the last row).  Pieces may, however, also CAPTURE laterally or backwards. 
Capturing is a way to buy more time in the game for your side.  Normally,
King is permitted to castle.  

In Dipole Chess, player wins if they capture their opponent's King (as
oppose to checkmate).  They can also win if their opponent is stalemated
(unable to move any of their pieces). 

Dipole Chess has several variant rules (any or all may be used):
1. Another win condition: Player wins the game if they get their king
across the board to one of their spaces their pawn promotes.
2. Castling is not permitted.
3. Rooks may make a non-capture move one space forward diagonally.

Feel free to download the Zillions file for Dipole Chess, and edit it, and give it a new name. I would be interested in trying it out. Maybe you can call this chess variant: Advance Degeneration Chess.

1. sorry, I forgot to enter my name in the last post 2. A lazy queen (or amazon) captures like a queen (the amazon like a knight also) but cannot move to an empty square. Somehow I like the idea that demoting ends with some 'lazy' piece, which only captures. But there are other possibilities too, of course. If this were a modification or a different game, depends on the pont of view, I think. I just want to give some ideas, maybe leading to a new game. The coding of demotion can be done so (shown with a bishop which demotes to knight): (define slide ;;normal sliding move ( $1 (while empty? add $1) (verify enemy?) add ) ) (define slidebishop ( $1 (while empty? (add Knight) $1) ;; demote on empty square (verify enemy?) add ;; dont demote when capturing ) ) .... (piece (name Bishop) (image White '...' Black '...') What is a 'Lazy Amazon'? Possible compromises in the game, is to allow a piece to demote to ANYTHING weaker than it, with either Knights and Bishops not able to demote, provided the piece it is demoted has been captured by an opponent. And, on this note, I think we are looking at a different game related to this one. Not sure how to code it up in Zillions, however, so I am going to hold off trying to do anything with this.

Another way would be to demote the Knight not to a pawn but directly to a lazy amazon. This I find even better, because it fits to the symmetry of the (lazy) queen (moving in all directions) when it can emerge on any square of the board. Pawns promote as usual to any piece-type, including a lazy queen.

Wouldn't a simple answer for the demotion issue to be that piece demote to pawn-like pieces that can't promote? This is another way to break the cycle.
