Pawns promote as in chess. You can play the game here: http://www.pathguy.com/chess/RoyalMag.htm The program is rather week, but it moves fast and will give you a good idea of how to play the game.

How is pawn promoting in this variant?

I was surprised to find a java applet version of this game. The applet
plays relatively weak, but gives you a good feel for the game.

If you want to try the game out and play around with the King and Royal
Magician promotions aspect, the link is:

Thanks Christine, for the comment and question about zrf - There is no zrf in the works for this game; but if someone with the time and know-how wants to make one, I have no objection. On a different note, it should be noted that Jeremy Good deserves credit for making the pre-set... he actually made several and took time to ask me which one I liked best. Thanks again, Jeremy.

hey this looks good, i like the idea of these pieces dropping pieces the
further up the board they go, should make for interesting chess, well
done.
(zrf?)

Naturally.

Jeremy: I was mentioning 'motivation' in an implied reference to Fide Chess, where it is typically best to leave the King on the first rank [and castled] and only venture the King outward when, for example:(a) one is approaching the endgame, or (b) Queens and Rooks are off the board.

Jeremy Good wrote on Wed, May 24, 2006 01:57 PM UTC:
Not as much motivation as in the wild Ibu Ibu Chess! ;-)

Jeremy: Thanks for the comment and for making the nice pre-set. As for the game, I'm glad to see you appear intrigued. In this game there is actually motivation to move one's King toward the enemy camp. Such movement can earn you an extra Bishop, Knight, and a Rook... of course, there is some risk involved. And, if you decide to play it safe, yet your opponent takes the risk and is successful, then you can find yourself be behind in material. So, there is sort of a struggle in this one between King safety and added material.

Great cartoon, Gary! Very amusing. Variant looks a lot of fun. You keep finding new incentives for me to put my king in danger, don't you? Hehe.
