I played this game as a boy around 1960. The object of the game was to put the opponent's General in danger 6 times in a row. You did not have to checkmate as in chess. I cannot find any information other than what you have posted, but I would sure love to get my hands on a copy of the game.

Thank-you for your post.

Another possibility is that 1880 is a typo for 1990. Does anyone know of this game actually being played before the latter year?

By George, you're right! The tank was developed during World War I; the bazooka too but not deployed until World War II; the jeep during World War II. Either this has been updated or someone is floating a hoax.

I do not understand why a game created in 1880 has tanks, bazookamen & jeeps. I do not believe these things existed in 1880.

Thanks for the comments. I made a few small corrections, and added another possible setup. Hans

'Two advanced guards'

The diagram shows four of them.

'cannons, who move one square in any of the nine directions'

There are nine directions? What are they?

'On this website, I was a commercial chess variant from the 19th
century'

I think this is taking chess variants too far! Have you gone back to being
a person from the 21st century? ;)
