It looks playable with a few modifications though

It is easy to force a draw by sinking all of the squares (personal experience playing the game). But I like the stalemate lose rule proposed by another comment here. That would make two games: normal checkmate-king strategy, or sink your opponent to oblivion strategy.

Maybe, allow pieces move trough gaps? When draws will be more rare. But it will be almost absolutely another game...

Dane,
Yes, the board can be cut in two. Yes, knights can jump over removed squares just like they jump over occupied squares. I'm not sure what you mean by 'special rule'.

Would it be allowed to remove spaces in such a way that there is a line along a row or coloumn efecctively sawing the board in half? Also can knights jump across these spaces and are there any special rules for this?

Should queens, rooks, bishops, knights and double pawn moves be allowed over missing spaces?

The game leads to draw too often if a player wants to remove a lot of squares, and there is no way to win after they are split

A problem that I just noticed is this: If the opponent's back row is
completely sunk, your Pawns become worth a whole lot less because
they can't promote!

Supposing that it is possible to split the board, then it appears that a
split could be such that knights could go from one island to the other as
long as the split is just one square wide, but that a split two squares
wide would stop knights going from one island to the other.

I would suggest these rules:

1. It is leagl to remove an edge square to esacape check.

2. It is legal to split the board.

3. A stalemated player (can't move a piece or remove a square) loses.

This sounds like a playable game. A couple of questions though. Can you remove an edge to get out of check? Also, by removing edges it would eventually be possible to split the board in two. Is there a rule against that?
