The Gnu is a capturable piece just as the Queen is. I can see how the confusion mnight have arisen. When a Gnu next to the King is under threat, the question is whether the player WHO HAS THESE PIECES TOGETHER wins, or whether the OTHER player can CONTINUE THE GAME by capturing the Gnu.
