Shouldn't a knight-bishop capturing an amazon become an amazon? It doesn't in the java applet.

Very interesting, especially the match played by the grandmasters.
I wonder whether the fact that R+K againt K cannot checkmate becomes a problem when players get more experienced with this game. For example, R+K can achive a tie againt R+K+P by sacrificing the rook.
To overcome this, one might consider prohibiting walking on w1-w4 with any piece or at least with the king. Or one might change the roles to make a stalemate a loss for the stalemated player.

A Kick the King chess problem. What happens if we remove check and stalemate rules and win by taking the king?[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Kick the King should be a very nice variant for acutal playing. Being almost identical to normal chess, winning endgames becomes easier. For example, king plus pawn against king can always win. Less draws, so more interesting game.
The same effect can be reached by even less change of the rules with only the following modification over normal chess: 'A player who is stalemated, looses the game.'
