Our Featured Variant: Try the Chinese game of Xiangqi, one of the most popular and enduring Chess variants in the world.
The following are readers' comments and ratings for the page Ideal Values and Practical Values (part 3).
| Date | Rating | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| 7 Nov 2001 | Excellent | A pleasing, if unsurprising result: when writing the page for
V.R. Parton's Dabbabante Chess, I could see by inspection that the
Dabbabante -- a (0,2) + (0,4) + (0,6) + (0,8) leaper -- had an ideal
value on a 10x10 board of 8. When I applied your equation, I found:
Which adds up, of course to 8.0. Nice! PBA |
| 28 Oct 2001 | None | Intuitive but not obvious. The estimates of what the multipliers "should be" came to me intuitively as I was writing and as I was deeply concentrated on this problem. They felt right as interpolations of the observed effects on the known strengths of the NN, R, and B. I jumped to conclusion. (Cue politically incorrect "Confucius say" joke).

| 27 Oct 2001 | None | You could say, as the math professors did in college, "It is intuitively obvious that ...". - JCL |
| 26 Oct 2001 | None | When I say "the multiplier for Dabbabbabbarider should be", I omit any justification for why it should be. Should perhaps say "Because its every step covers two squares and because its basic movement is Rookwise, I have the interpolative intuition the the multipier (and so forth)". Should say it's a wild guess that feels right. |
| 26 Oct 2001 | None | The Nutty Knights' honor has been restored.

| 19 Oct 2001 | None | Oh, I just put that error in there to see if anybody was paying attention. Did you know that I am also the inventor of the invisible smiley?

| 19 Oct 2001 | Excellent | One minor point about Avian Airforce match-ups: the Nutty Knights actually do defend b7 -- the Forfnifurlrurking on d8 should cover it with a forward Knight's move. |
| 17 Oct 2001 | None | OK. For each article in this series, I have linked the first
reference in that article to a piece not found in the usual Western
Chess game to the Piececlopedia article for it. Linking all of them
would have made the articles into seas of links, which can be
distracting.
". . . Was I Wazir? I was!" PBA |
| 17 Oct 2001 | None | Would it be possible to link each mention of an exotic piece (Wazir, Ferz, etc) to its definition in the Piecelopedia? |
| 17 Oct 2001 | None | The Chess Variant Pages' own Piececlopedia contains definitions of all the basic pieces referenced in these articles.

| 17 Oct 2001 | Good | Concerning the entire series, most of us don't play Chess with the Wazir, Ferz, Alfil, or Dabaa. It would be easier to follow if Mr. Betza defined these more frequently. |
