25 Sep 2001Excellent Thanks to Seongmo Yoon, this page seems all right. I like Janggi especially due to its powerful pawns, and also for its complex use of cannons. I think initial position variance is one of the important features of Janggi, which differ from Xiangqi, so to get it right is very nice. (Horse-Elephant is usually defensive, while Elephant-Horse is offensive... So the rule gives choices for players.) I was also impressed by the statement, "one declares his pass by turning his General over, upside down, on the same spot." It reminded my surprise when I learned about the stalemate of Chess for the first time. Also I found the rule of Komi here - as this page said, I never heard of it before. And quite nice description of "Naked Facing Draw". It is a very significant rule in Janggi endgame, so it is important to know it and use it cleverly. All my thanks to this wonderful website!

1 Sep 2000None 1. The best site for jangi resources is http://my.netian.com/~janggee/ Its host is a college student who himself is a top level ama jangi player. His e-mail address is (email removed contact us for address) mail.net 2. The strongest jangi playing software is "jangi dosa". It is one dan level commercial software. Home page of its author is http://members.tripod.lycos.co.kr/JanggiDosa/ His e-mail addres is (email removed contact us for address) tel.co.kr Free demo version is downloadable from http://members.tripod.lycos.co.kr/JanggiDosa/dosa.zip Demo version does not support handi games. Demo version supports only one major opening : corner horse vs corner horse. Sorry, this information and softwares are only in Korean. Good luck, Seonmgo Yoon ((email removed contact us for address) box.com)

But they are totally different two games. Jang and Sho literally mean General or, even, King. Janggi (jangki) in Korea is very similar to Xiangqi (Chinese chess) with some important variations. Xiang of Xiangqi literally means elepant of Korean Chess and Chinese Chess. For janggi : http://members.tripod.lycos.co.kr/JanggiDosa/ (You can download a demo version of One dan level commercial version) http://www1.mgame.com/netjanggi (It has 3,000 loggin players. It is all in Korean and foreigners cannot register here) http://www.neojanggi.co.kr (It is all in Korean and foreigners cannot register here) For xiangqi : xiangqi.com www.icompile.com/xiangqi xiangqi.8m.com (I did not check if these Xiangqi sites still work) Good luck.
