| 6 Feb 2002 | Excellent | I enjoy playing Chess ay many different Chess Clubs and on many computer programs. I love to read book about Chess, too. Here is the problem. Some Chess Clubs have stricter rules than others. Their are three cases listed blow and I want to know if their is a reason for these rules and which chess clubs I should go to to avoid confusion Myself. The rules I mention here are so confusing that a few Chess Organisations I go to don't enforce them at all. 1. Regarding Castling, some Chess Books/Clubs say the only conditions in which You can't castle is if it moved Your Kig or rook that castles or of it will put You King in danger of being captured. Naturally, no one would wanna do that, since loss of You King means loss of the game. Unfortunately, some other Books and ChessClubs follow a stricter view by saying You can't castle Your King to safely if it is attacked (or "in Check") EVEN IF THE KING IS SAFE AFTER THE MOVE. Nor can You castle if the move puts the ROOK in danger of being captured, again regardless if the King is safe from capture after the move. The fact that these rules seems to defy logic is the reason that many don't follow these rules in teaching and playing Chess. Seems like their is really no reason for these rules at all. Wouldn't it have been better to say, "As long as Your King is not in check after You castle and as long as You didn't move the King earilier in the game, Then You can castle?" Because this is what some of the clubs that ignore this rule say. Are their really such rules? 2. In Pawn Promotion, When You get one of You pawn to the last rank, I'm sure You know that You may promote it to any of the other five chessmen (King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight.) But again, some of My opponents and some of the Chess Clubs' rules are picky and state You can't promote to another Queen or King because these two Royal Pieces are the most valuable in the point system (pawn promoted to Queen = 9, and a pawn promoted to King = 8 points), so I want to know, is their really a rule that says You can only have one Queen or King at a time? Does it really matter if You promote a pawn to another Queen or King? Why shouldn't we have more then the original number of Kings and Queens on the board (or more then 2 rooks, bishops or knights for that matter)? 3. Finally, the most frustrating case is that most books state: "The object of the game is to capture the opponents KING:" Most player who are unable to get their king from capture know thev'e lost on the next move because I'm going to capture the king. But other player claim that if I capture their King they have a right to take back their move and find a better one. But He was careless, why should I be denied of a win if I was able to capture the King. Some books even say You can't capture the King, does this mean that Kings are immune to capture? Does it mean that, if a player promotes a pawn to another King, they have 2 chessmen that CANNOT be capted? Please, clarify: Is their really such a rule that says You CAN'T capture any Kings, EVEN THOUGH MOST BOOKS SAY THAT IS THE VERY OBJECT OF THE GAME? |

| 11 Nov 2001 | Poor | In the opening line of this website: "It is generally assumed that chess originated in India, 5-7 centuries after the birth of Christ." should probably read "before" instead of "after". |

| 20 Apr 2001 | Excellent | I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I can buy a circular chess board. I had an old cardboard one but I lost it and I would like to get something a little more durable. I can be E-mailed at (email removed contact us for address) .com thanks. Adam Bigge |
| 2 Apr 2001 | None | Hello, I have a Chess Variant you may be interested in. It is played on an 8 by 10 square board with the addition of Diplomats next to the King and Queen. These pieces can move either as a Bishop or as a Knight and are almost as powerful as a Queen. The extra power on the board makes draws almost difficult and the Jester makes anything more than rudimental opening theory almost impossible. I can be contacted at my E-mail address of: Karl_(email removed contact us for address) oo.com if you would like additional information. Karl P. Munzlinger |
