| 24 Jun 2001 | None | I looked more closely at the second link to a global chess site (the first link had expired) and according to Babylon 5 Global Chess rules, the bishop (and queen, when moving diagonally) moves along an S-shaped path, twisting at the pole. As the bishop moves through the pole, it moves to the diametrically opposite square, which is still of the same color! For example, the bishop can move from a1 to e1, from b1 to f1, from c1 to g1, or from d1 to h1, as part of its diagonal route. An example of a longer move by the bishop is b4-a3-h2-g1-c1-d2-e3-f4, provided that intermediate squares are unoccupied. Notice that all of these are dark sqares. Ergo, the extended move of the bishop does not change its color! Consquently, bishops are still limited to half of the board, contrary to the claims made on "http://www.chessvariants.com/shape.dir/globe.html". Jason (email removed contact us for address) .com |
