| 30 Dec 2001 | None | My wife and daughter made me two chessboards for Cristmas. They made a 10 x 10 board on a Fredrix canvas artist's panel. They used heavy construction paper (the good stuff, from an artist's supply store) for the squares, cutting it with a rotary cutter such as quilters would use to cut fabric. A rotary cutter is like a small, VERY sharp pizza cutter. Used with a straight edge, it can cut long, straight lines through multiple layers. They then decoupaged the squares to the board. It looks nice, shouldn't be too hard to store, and cost about $15 (US). The major costs were the canvas panel and the decoupage glue. They also made a small decorative 8 x 8 board out of ribbon! Wide ribbon in contrasting colors was woven together to create the effect of squares. The edges were then trimmed with a decorative gold ribbon and glued together with a sewer's product called Steam-a-Seam. This is like ribbons of iron-on glue, all by itself. Put it between two pieces of fabric and iron to fuse it. The board can be used on either side. I intend to keep it rolled in a tube to store it, as creases would damage it. This board only cost about $5 (US). Obviously, this technique is most appropriate to square boards. - JCL |
