2 Jul 2001Good I have also contributed DOUBLE-EIGHTEEN-STONE-CHESS and CANNONS AND CRABS. My name is David Short. In addition, I have submitted sample games for DOUBLECHESS. I haven't seen many other sample games to other CVs on this site, have you? If you wish to contact me, my email address is (email removed contact us for address) mail.com
4 Nov 2000Excellent I'm an old former chess master (only in the 22 hundreds) who believes that the game has been played out at the highest level. I think that could be remedied by introducing a few other pieces which could be substituted for the Queen. Thus players could choose to play with the Q or with a few other pieces of strength about equal to the Queen. If both players chose the Queen, then it would simply be an "old fashioned game". I propose the following pieces which could be substituted for the Queen: (C) Champion can move to any of the nearest, but non adjacent squares. Thus it would move as a Knight and also on the SECOND diagonal and on the SECOND horizontal or vertical line. Thus in mid board it would have 16 moves -8 like a knight and 8 to squares of the same color which it started. I would also permit it to move one square straight forward like a pawn but not able to capture (thus it would be like the greatest knight who could dismount and lead his horse forward. (E) Executioner could move like a combined bishop and knight BUT it could capture (EXECUTE) its own colored pieces and pawns. It could open up lines for rooks etc and if the opponent chose a "MISSIONARY", see below, it would be able to execute potentially treasoness pawns. (A) Arch bishop could move like a King and Bishop BUT its own colored pawns and pieces would not restrict it. It could move right "through" them. (M) Missionary (my favorite) would be a "piece of peace". It would be unable to capture or threaten any piece. It could only move as a simple bishop with no power to capture. HOWEVER, it would have the power to "convert" pawns (ONLY PAWNS) from the opponens color to the color of the Missionary. Upon moving next to an enemy pawn would say "bless you my son" and change the color of that pawn. It could only change (convert) one pawn on each move and the "conversion" would be part of the move. Conversion would be of any pawn in any way adjacent to the Missionary. The other pieces which I propose would be somewhat similar it strength to the Q, however the M might be overly strong and some limitation might have to be placed upon it (like after 2 "conversions' it reverts to a "plain old fashioned" bishop. These very modest proposed changes in the game would end reliance on opening book knowledge. It would permit players to chose their favorite type of weapon (just as in ye days of old, a knight could choose many a different weapon as his principal weapon). It would aso give the computers a big challenge in trying to master this game. I would be receptive to any comments.
