2009-11-21Fergus Duniho Verified as Fergus DunihoNoneIt shouldn't be difficult to program this game for Game Courier. But instead of doing it myself, I will leave it as an exercise for someone else. You can use one of the chess include files. The chess2 include file makes development easier, though the chess include file will also work. Since most of the pieces in this game are divergent pieces, you can look at the code in chess2 for Cannons to see how to program divergent pieces.Edit

If you do a search on Ajax Chess, you'll find some web-based Chess programs, so called because Ajax is short for Asychronous JavaScript and XML.

This game is very similar to Ultra Chess from 1999. While I haven't played this game, what I recall from playing that game is that adding a King's move to each piece took away from the distinctiveness of each piece, making it harder for pieces to threaten each other without being threatened back, and I believe it made the Knight a little too powerful. But this game avoids these faults, because the pieces cannot capture with their additional powers of movement.

I am looking for a certain circular chess variant I have seen in the 1980s.
It was published in a physics students' journal (if I remember correctly
from Bochum) in germany. The board consisted of a full circular disk. The
'squares' in the innermost disk were triangular sectors. It used standard
chess pieces.

The most striking feature I still remember is that the bishop changes the
square colour while crossing the center. Does anyone know this variant?

Fergus,

Can you delete this one too?
http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-josesanfer-2004-151-422

I checkmated my opponent a few years ago, yet the game never changed status to
completed, and still shows in my active game list.

I get the same error that Jeremy got below about not having permission to delete it

Thanks.

For those concerned about the pieces in the Xiang Hex preset, you can
freely modify which ones are displayed just for you by selecting what you
want under the piece set. For instance, if you don't understand the
Chinese pieces, you can use the Alfaerie set with either rooks or chariots.
Just select your piece set and hit submit/verify (I forget which) without
sending a move and it will change the board. No reason to restart the
round.

Nick: Excellent if you add the WKC's pieces!

John: Thanks for the clarification. I don't remember exactly where I read
the expression 'dabbabah runner' for referring to the Adjutant. I will
make the correction later. Then the Adjutant and the Emperor are two
different pieces and this last also deserves its place in the
Piececlopedia.

The Adjutant is a combination of a bishop (or ferz-rider) and a
dabbabah-rider. It is not lamed orthogonally. The combination of bishop
and lame dabbabah-rider was introduced more than fifty years ago as the
Emperor, but to avoid confusion with Emperor King Chess I reduced it in
rank to a Grand Duke.

Do you have a 'Eurasian Pawn' (if not that, one under another name)? It
moves forward one space, but may capture one space forward, or either space
in front of it diagonally. There is an option with it where it may move
either one or two spaces forward as its first move (option depends on
player and game conditions)

Piececlopedia [all messages] [add response]
2009-11-17Carlos Cetina Verified as Carlos CetinaNoneWe can update gradually the Piececlopedia devoting each day some minutes to add new piece descriptions by means of this subject of the Comments and Ratings section. The basic idea is to make little changes to the text show below, that it's a reproduction of the Piececlopedia index in which I have added a few new pieces to show how we can work on the matter.

If anyone wants to contribute, copy the text written by me with HTML tags from the editing page and paste it into the box of the new comment where the addtions will be done. Special, detailed descriptions of any particular piece can be made by creating one subject by piece with its respective link in the index. Subsequent contributors would do the same with the work of the last predecessor; thus, the last work would be always the updated Piececlopedia and periodically (every 6 months, say) Fergus could transfer the document to its original place.

I propose to destinate a space at the end of the document for comments and a short explanation about what the contributor has done.

At the age of 75 I am a novice trying to keep my memory going and had to
find a set of chess and a board. On one of my visits to a Spanish market I
found a set in wooden box the pieces of which are unusual. I am curious to
know if they are common or not.

In general terms the pieces are representative of the Persion Empire and
the Moors. Each piece appears to be hand painted and in very fine detail.

Pawns of course are representative of each army. The kings and queens again
the same each in costume and highly detailed even under a glass. and full
colour. The Rooks fitting for the religen and again is intricate detail
with arabic lettering around tghe base and a date 2004 along with a name
but the name is like normal hand writing and difficult to read.

The detail is amazing- eg. the face of the king is only 5mm across and 8cm
tall, but it is lifelike. The clothing, jewelery, skin, etc almost flawless
even under strong magnification. The Bishop clothed in irmine in white,
red and blue. The Knights are on horseback with the horse rearing detail
amazing. All have the arabic around the base and one set is dark around the
base and the other a lighter colour otherwise all pieces are in true

Hey Charles,

I am actually in the process of trying to make presets for your 12# variants. I was
a little confused on some of the pieces (I think some images represented different
pieces as the different variants were listed). I have made a list of what variants
you listed and what I believe to be the opening setup of the armies. Could you
please look over what I have written and correct the inefficiencies? Thank you.

Well most of my Quadruple Besiege variants have at least twice as many pieces with a
Rook move, so that will help Checkmate to happen. Remember that the minimum to
Checkmate on a board with edges is a Rook plus one's own King, so an extra Rook to
effect a virtual edge should allow the same on this board.
The geometry is not quite Moebius, it's a bit more complex than that. A single
orthogonal step across a horizontal join appears as a 10:9 leap. Bishops really are
colourbound and, as I say in the text, each visible 10-cell diagonal loops round
dircetly on itself.

If I recall correctly, I had been getting error messages when I tried to enter any move. But if I'm wrong, perhaps I was trying to enter an illegal move, like a check or capture on the second move, most likely. At any rate, I appreciate your work you've done on this and the attention you've paid to it, with apologies if I misdirected it. Regards.Edit
