I have investigated the properties of the Camel on the 9x9 board, and the 10x10, and 8x8. Mexican Chess (cf. Encycl. of Chess Var.) is a 10x10 variant which is bad. The Camel immediately attacks the unguarded pawn in the initial position, or will threaten an exchange of the heavier bishop or knights on the first rank. It forces the opening so it works badly. I suspect that 9x9 is the best alternative. However, the Camel is a somewhat awkward piece. The reason why I tried it is because of its value, namely 2. This means, amongst other things, that it can create a breach by exchanging it for two pawns. So I came up with the following two pieces that also worth 2 (I suppose), and they are much easier to work with. Especially the Alpaca has interesting properties. However, the third piece, the Guanaco, is worth 3, it seems. It is a curious and interesting piece. I have implemented all these pieces, as variants, in my Pilgrim Chess and Pioneer Chess. Can somebody estimate their real value? Zillions thinks that the Guanaco is worth a bishop.

The Llama jumps one or two steps orthogonally, capturing only on the second. Its value is 2.

The Alpaca jumps one or two steps orthogonally, capturing only on the first. Its value is 2.

The Guanaco jumps continuously two squares orthogonally to empty square (i.e. it slides on the same square colour). It can also step, and capture, one square orthogonally. Its value is 3.

It's high time that somebody develops a Javascript presentation program
for chess variants. It needn't be any rules checking, only a lot of
different gif pieces and different board sizes. Text comments should be
possible, but display of variants isn't necessary.
