Centennial Chess Pictures

This is the second set in a series of pictures of chess variant sets. The theme of the series is that all the sets are finalists in the 1999 Large Variant Contest. There are also some pictures of some of these sets on the web pages of Fergus Duniho, but I wanted to get some pictures under more optimal lighting conditions.

The pictures below are of John William Brown's Centennial Chess. The Shogi-like pieces give the array simplicity and elegance. I followed John's instructions for creating cut-out color pieces: After printing out two copies of the web page, I pasted them to posterboard and applied laminating material. I think cut out each piece. This worked quite well, however I will be attempting to make the pieces a bit thicker (as they are difficult to pick up at their current thickness).

The board was created using Fergus Duniho's chess construction set ideas, with the additional idea of creating larger "sub-boards" of 4x4 and 2x2 squares to make setting up boards faster and easier. To create sub-boards, I simply taped individual squares together and then used laminating paper to hold the squares in place.

The pictures for the next set (Vyrémorn Chess) are here. The pictures for the previous set (Eight-Stone Chess) are here.
